ENGIE selected to build Montreal's future new-generation metro
The ENGIE Transport Canada (ETC) consortium, comprising ENGIE Solutions and ENGIE Services Canada has been selected by the NouvLR partnership to help build the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM). With the long-term objective of increasing train speeds and facilitating mobility for Montreal residents, ETC teams will build the catenary system for 26 stations, covering a distance of 67 kilometres. This major contract will run from January 2020 to July 2023 and will give rise to a completely new kind of public transport, the REM automated light rail network. With this project, the pioneering energy-transition company ENGIE demonstrates its ability to implement “end-to-end” technological solutions and rail infrastructure, thus promoting more advanced, sustainable transport systems throughout the world.
ENGIE Solutions: green mobility reaching as far as North America

In combination with ENGIE Services Canada’s expertise in the design, development and implementation of sustainable infrastructure management solutions, the ETC consortium has a solid track record in the optimization of public transport infrastructure and networks to serve passengers.
This is the first major project that ENGIE Solutions has been awarded in North America, following its selection by the NouvLR consortium of companies that is responsible for overseeing the project engineering and construction for the city of Montreal. The new ENGIE Group brand will thus be responsible for designing, supplying and building the catenary system for the whole of the REM, in a market with high potential.
Indeed, only a small proportion of the North-American rail network has been electrified, representing around 100 kilometres in Canada in comparison with 15,000 km in France.
The Montreal REM: an engineering challenge to serve the city and its residents
Using innovative technology, the REM is a new kind of public transport, a fully automated, electric, light rail network. The REM is the largest public transport project undertaken in Quebec in the last 50 years. It will include 26 stations and span the Greater Montreal area from East to West and from North to South. Work will start in 2020 and will continue through to 2023. The first trains are expected to start running in 2021 on one section of the network.
REM trains are driverless, and will be directed by a control centre that will ensure proper functioning of equipment at all times. The platforms will be protected by screen doors. These new features will ensure a safe, reliable, frequent service for passengers.
Using its world-renowned expertise, ENGIE Solutions will first of all provide the NouvLR team with technical support to finalize the design of the catenary system.
Drawing on their catenary expertise, combined with their ability to optimize local engineering, the ETC teams will then be responsible for designing, installing and supervising the construction process along the whole line.
Once the REM is operational, the airport will be just 20 minutes from the city centre, in comparison with 1 hour on average now. With this contract, ENGIE holds true to its ambition to become a leading supplier of turnkey systems for transportation infrastructure, including metros, trams and high-speed railways (electrification, overhauling catenary systems, overhead contact lines for city and inter-city transport networks, track signaling equipment, conventional or computer terminals, machine rooms, operator terminals, etc.).
